Russia - Banking

Foreign currency can only be exchanged at authorized banks and official bureaux de change. Traveller's cheques in US dollars are preferred, there are additional exchange rate charges for other forms of currency.

Major credit cards including Visa and MasterCard, are accepted in the larger hotels and restaurants, and at foreign currency shops and restaurants. However cash transactions in Rubles are preferred.

It is illegal to import and export Rubles. Foreign currency can be imported up to a maximum of US$10,000 but if equivalent to $3000 or more it must be declared. No more than the amount of foreign currency declared on arrival can be taken out of Russia. One advantage of having a bank account in Russia is that your salary can be paid into your account in Rubles and withdrawn quite legally via ATMs in other countries.
