Nigeria - I have info for prospective expats

Post Posted: Sat Aug 23, 2008 2:41 pm

Hi All

I know this forum gets browsed regularly by people who have been offered posts in Nigeria. As an expat in Nigeria (specifically the Port Harcourt/River State/Niger Delta), I am willing to discuss pros/cons and other aspects of life here.

Please send private message or respond to this post and I will be happy to assist.

Cheers

Hello. My name is Jerry, and I am seriously considering moving to Owerri to live for one or two years. I have a good friend there, and we want to rent a one bedroom apartment. My move will probably be at the end of August 2010.

We would like an unfurnished apartment with AC. My friend is going to talk to some leasing agents. We think we might have to pay about $3000.00 for the year. We would also like an apartment that includes a stove and, if possible, a refrigerator. And, of course, security is very important. We would like to try to save money by buying a used couch. Do you have any comments or suggestions about what I have written here? Any help will be appreciated.

Although my friend will be very protective of me, do you have any advice about personal safety, especially not what to do? I have read and been told that the Niger Delta Region can be somewhat dangerous for Americans.

My e mail address is hoopsguy38 @ yahoo.com, and I would like it if you would write me there.

Take care and thanks for any help you can give me. Jerry

Finally, I have visited Owerri, Lagos and Aba twice. I have friends in Lagos.

Hey, I've got a prospective offer for Lagos. I've never been to Nigeria and have heard mixed reviews wrt expat life. I'm currently in Riyadh (14 months now) and have worked also in Palestine. I've been faced some rather dismal things so not sure how much of a shock Lagos would be... but would appreciate some further detail.

Rgds,
