Dear Jim,

Thank you for your reply.

I am particularly impressed with your description about how your family immigrated from County Cork in Ireland. You are a methodical man who puts in many thoughts processes prior to taking up a position or assuming a role.

I wished I knew about how my great-grandparents came to the then peninsular of Malaya. But no, I have no such information whatsoever.

I take this opportunuty to thank you for taking the time off to advise us, and to wish you the very best too.

We will continue in the other thread.

ROX:

Thank you for your nice words to me here.

I have all ways had a personal interest in history, both that of my own family, and in a wider sense that of my homeland, Canada.

Jim b. Toronto.

Hi Jim,

This is a really interesting post. We have just decided to leave the UK and move abroad. Canada is one of the options and my partner's first choice. But we have only ever been to Whistler. We are both very keen skiers/snowboarders and are looking to move somewhere with skiing on the doorstep and a large area.

At the moment my partner is a farmer (but not really wanting to pursue this) and I have a medical biochemistry degree and am also a qualifed lawyer. However I do not really wish to pursue either of these. I currently work from home with a MLM company and also selling property in Bulgaria and we run a farming website for the Uk (and expats in France) at www.gofarmer.com .

Ideally we are looking to buy a fairly large place, reasonably close to the slopes, with some land and probably run a B&B or guesthouse. We have no experience in this though. We would want to bring our two dogs and 2 cats as well.

Any advice.

Rachel

Rachel:

My first suggestion would be the southern mainland area of British Columbia, for the skiiing and the scenery.

If you have been to Whistler before, I would suggest that you do more research on other similar places in B.C. With your professional qualifications, you should have no trouble immigrating to Canada.

The most in demand skill is your bio-chemistry degree, and you should look at both the University of British Columbia, as well as Simon Fraser University, both located near Vancouver. Both are top level research locations and I am sure they have web sites for employment.

A different way to go could be getting your Real Estate agent's permit in B.C. and selling for a R.E. company. Lots of new homes are being built there.

In Ontario you should take a look at the town of Collingwood, located about 100 miles to the north of Toronto. Lots of skiing resorts and it has both a winter and a summer tourist season. Land is available or you could by an existing B and B operation. Do a Google search for Collingwood, Ontraio, and also "Blue Mountain " resorts and ski hills. Also for this property site.....www.shipyards-collingwood.com which is a new housing development right on the harbour in Collingwood. Notice the huge choice of designs and price ranges there. Collingwood will suit you if you like lots of outdoors recreatiion all year round.

Animals to Canada? You should do a Google search for that subject, as I think there are short quarantine periods for dogs when you get here, but I am not sure. Look for info at Agriculture Canada's web site.

AS for the bar society here, we have more Lawyers than we need at this time.

Tourism is a major industry in Canada, so I would suggest going in that direction. Do some searches to see what your competition will be like here.

Questions? Ask me here.

Jim B Toronto.
