Things to do in Brasov

Post Posted: Tue Jan 23, 2007 3:45 am

I was wondering what are some things I can can do in Brasov, Romania to fill my days. Here my days are full between working part time and homeschooling my 2 children but when we move the company my husband is working for will paying for private school for both our children and possibly househelp to boot. So far everytime I ask my father in law (who is living there already) what I can do he tells me I can shop or ski. Just in case you are wondering why I am here asking all of these questions instead of him. He Is running a very large mission group as well a very rapidly expanding company. He is so busy it is hard to get him to take the time to answer our super important questions, the rest I am posting here and there. Thanks
Jennifer

Brasov is full of places worth to be seen. Over time many buildings were built today have become tourist attractions. No modern destinations should not be forgotten. The great monasteries in the area, castles, historical monuments, ski slopes, as you do not regret that you have visited one such area of the country! People of Brasov are very hospitable and cheerful!

These are the things you can do in Brasov:

The She-Wolf statue
This statue stands in front of the City Hall buiding; it is a copy of the famous "La Lupa" (Rome, Capitoline Museum) and represent a she-wolf and the twins (Romulus - the founder of Rome and Remus). Another copies are located in Bucharest (now Sf. Gheorghe Square, moved from Romana Square), Cluj, Alba-Iulia and many other cities, mostly in Transilvania.
Directions: The City Hall, Brasov

Town Hall
There are excellent cafes all around, and inside you can find both the tourist office and the Brasov History Museum, neither of which seemed all that busy.
The square is central for everything and is a great place to start or finish your walking trip around the city. The old town hall was built in 1420 and today serves as the Brasov History Museum.

Piata Sfatului
The council square is a lovely square where it is nice to just sit down and relax and take in the beautiful merchant houses surrounding it. This is also said to be the spot where the legendary Pied Piper led the children of Hamlin.

Ecaterina's Gate
Wonderful gate, with its slim towers. It is placed at the southeast side of the Medieval Fortress of Brasov, and was constructed in the year 1559, as one of the entrances into the fortress.
This medieval constructions has remained almost intact, in the original form.

portals of the Black Church
There are six portals of the church, which are valuable art creations giving an imposing air to the famous building. The main entrance to the church is the West portal. The wooden door is surrounded by wonderful stone sculptures.
At the North side of the church, there are two portals, with remarkable architectural elements.

Poiana Brasov
Poiana Brasov, a well-known ski resort at only 13 km from the centre of Brasov, is a great place to breath in fresh mountain air, to be pampered in very good hotels and to taste Romanian food in excellent restaurants.
Sport lovers can find a wide range of opportunities for ski, mountainbikes, swimming, tennis, football or horseriding.

Weavers Bastion
The best preserved bastion of the old city walls. Built between 1421-1573, it's a big construction and inside you find the main attraction, a model of ancient Brasov city where you will see some interesting features, like the fact that instead of the main street there was a river.

Parc Aventura
2.5 hectares of forest, 80 trees,92 platforms, 692m of Tyrolienne, 100 games divided into 8 passes of progressive difficulty (the easiest one for children between 4 and 8 y.o.).
The park is opened everyday of the year, from 10 a.m.

The Hollywood type sign
The Hollywood has one, why shouldn't Brasov have one too? The Cable car takes you to the viewpoint by the sigh from where you can have a great view on Brasov and surroundings.

Republicii Street
Strada Republicii is Brasov's main thoroughfare, leading away from the Council Square towards Bdul Eroilor. No cars are allowed here which makes it a popular place for strolling. The street is lined with shops, cafes and restaurants and it's crowded but nice.

I hope you like it! Smile
