Izmir Wildlife Park and its new addition

Post Posted: Sun Mar 13, 2011 2:39 am

Today we visited the wildlife park in Sasali just outside Cigli where the old airport used to be. We have been before but this time we went for a very special reason! We hoped we'd get the chance to see a very precious baby! Smile
Baby Izmir was named by residents of the Aegean city participating in an internet survey.
Her mother is Begumcan and her father is Winner. They are Indian race elephants. Izmir is the first baby elephant to be born in Turkey. She weighed 110 kg and was born in February 2011.
It was a lovely sunny day so ideal for a walk around this delightful place. We saw the tigers, lions and pumas before making our way to the enclosure where the elephants are. Daddy is kept separately but can see his wife and daughter across the fence! Mummy and baby were down near the water. Mummy was giving herself a muddy spray over her back! Baby was demanding a feed! Smile
It was delightful to see them.
We enjoyed the rest of our wander around. The children's zoo is charming and the staff there happily doled out cucumbers and apples so that we could feed and stroke the ponies and goats!
The Tropical Dome was fascinating, we particularly liked the lemurs.
The whole area is well organized and clean. It is child and wheelchair friendly. There are toilets and cafes in various locations. Most importantly, the creatures living there seem happy and healthy.
