Problem with being treated as a local for pay purposes
I work at a school in Brunei, having just completed my first year of a two year contract. I was recruited from the UK for my current job and moved to Brunei because I have a Brunei wife.
I recently applied for another post at the school having been invited to and was going to be recruited as a local because of my wife being Bruneian. My suspicion of course is that I would be dealt with as a local so that the school could get away with paying me less than they might do a UK based person.
Due to a potential department restructure, another job opportunity may come around soon and I wanted to try to find out what the situation might be with regard to dealing with me as a local.
I'm a UK citizen, even though I have a Brunei wife, it doesn't give me any benefits, I am only entitled to a green IC just like any other UK employee. I am still within a 2 year contract where I was recruited from the UK and if my employment were to be terminated for any reason, I would have to go back to live in the UK because I wouldn't be able to support myself in Brunei.
Can anyone help me with me being able to argue the case that I should be dealt with as a UK citizen if any opportunities arise? Is what the school are trying to do within Bruneian Employment law?
Thanks very much, any help would be appreciated!!
