Making friends in CR
Sorry if this is a dumb question.
I'm a mid-forties, English, single male. I've lived abroad for most of my career, but am now thinking of retiring to CR (been back in the UK for two years and have already had enough of it).
I've got a 'passive income' of around $3k/month from renting out a couple of properties I own in the UK, and am hoping I can live on that in Costa Rica (although I'll probably think about setting up some sort of small/low income business if I relocate, because it's good to have things to do).
My main worry is that I just won't meet anyone. All the other times I've changed country, it's been because of work, and it's quite easy to get to know people in the office and kick-start a social life.
Could I please ask: Do you think I will have a problem finding a bunch of people that I could think of as 'friends'? I'm not super-extrovert, but I'm not shy either - just normal. I was hoping to live in a small town (not very keen on cities). Perhaps somewhere like Playa Hermosa just outside of Jaco (then I could have a quiet life in Hermosa, but drive into Jaco if I wanted a night on the town). Or somewhere similar.
Is it easy to meet other expats? And are the local ticos welcoming? I know they are friendly, but do they actually become friends with expats? Lastly, are there many expats in their 40s out there?
Thanks so much for any advice.

Hi Jon. Welcome to Costa Rica this way, meanwhile you have a chance to come in person.
You are doing the right thing, asking here about meeting people. I know there are local groups of expats which have contact with each others very frequently.
Some are members of sites like this and/or associations. A client of mine, living in San Rafael, Heredia, invited me once to meet some of his friends downtown. They used to go to a local restaurant for chatting and sharing stories.
So, keep asking for groups that have meetings. If I can give you more info, just contact me.
