Life in Kuwait

Post Posted: Wed Jun 02, 2010 8:23 pm

I have been working in Iraq for the past 20 months. I am coming to the end of my contract and am considering my options. One of those options is Kuwait. Would those of you currently in Kuwait or with history in Kuwait please tell me what life is like there for a woman? I blend in well with different cultures without losing my American identity. I have made many friends here but need to try something and someplace new. I am interested in what everyday life is like before I accept an offer. Any assistance will be sincerely appreciated. Kuwait is very safe & progressive. You are free to follow your culture completely here. You just need to make sure you don't hurt the traditional Islamic laws. Kuwait has many expats, many from south Asia & America as well.

Being a women, you will feel respected in Kuwait. In lift if you are alone, a man won't enter except he is accompanied by a woman. In a queue, you get to over take a man, in parking you get the priority.

In office you are expected to wear decent clothes, but in public you are free (still it would be better to wear respectable clothes).

Nightlife in Kuwait is blank, no clubs nothing, thats one thing you may miss. Yea again in Kuwait, there are many earning opportunities. Being a women, you can earn same as your male counterpart in almost all the corporate jobs. With safety concern, Kuwait is much safer that US in safety index, more than 62

Hey, definitely Kuwait is an awesome place for everyone, people come from across the globe to earn and live here.

I am myself an expat, I feel free and I mixed easily here.

Everyday life is easy here, you will feel better than Iraq anytime.

In summers the temperature soars a lot and winter is damn cold too.

Socializing like in US might not be possible unless you find your friends to. Pubs and bars are in scarce.

Public transports are safe and again you will be given priority as a woman. A proposed metro is on its way easing the travelling thing.

At work, few work basic work ethics like you can only wear skirts which will be as long as it will cover your knee and same applies for elbow, no tight clothes allowed at many places. A lot of earning & investing opportunities here as compared to other gulf countries.

Food is awesome if you like traditional Arabic food you will fall in love with Kuwaiti food.

As you said you can blend with the culture then I will say it will be easy and happy ride for you.

At the end a women, will feel respected and special all the time in Kuwait, I guarantee on that.
