You do not need an NIE number to open a bank account. Relative opened one this morning without one!

a bank account can be opened with a passport, even online one bank only wanted my passport number.

I think what "piglet" meant was that without an NIE you can't start using it........you wouldn't be issued the debit cards until you had concluded the NIE business.

any money paid into an account that is opened without an NIE is generally held in a "frozen state" not earning interest for the account holder.

Most if not all of the Spanish banks have pretty good websites with information available in several languages including English.

Buenos noches

This newbie is totally lost. What is an NIE number? Is that like our National Insurance number?

Do you automatically receive one when you register as a resident? Or is that a different situation all together?

No. NIE means "Numero Identidad Extranjero" (foreigner's number). Spaniards have a DNI number (Documento Nacional de Identidad). The insurance number is separate and has absolutely nothing to do with the NIE. The NIE is your ID number. Without identification in Spain, you cannot do anything except breath. When you register as a resident, you do automatically receive one (though it may take a while).

With regard to NIE numer in Javea, our abogado recently managed to loose our origional certificates, but it was no problem to go to Denia Police Station, take a ticket and get a new one issued. Picked it up a few days later , but this time no need to wait, just ask the policeman who is on duty in the building handing out the tickets to search thru' the piles of docs he has beside him.

Make sure you take a Copy of your passport and any other documentation, they want to see origionals but also need a copy and they will not make a copy while you are there!!!!. Also be prepared to speak Spanish or get somewho can, the guy behind the desk gave us a straight NUNCA when we asked if he understood English....

Good Luck

Hi, I applied for my Nie number and bought my house all on the same day, opened my bank account with my passport all with the help of a very good solicitor (spanish) who has become a very good friend of ours. We were not getting very far without him and we didnt get the nie number issued in the town where we bought the house. You definately need a spanish speaker, your passport and two passport photos per person and patience but in hind sight probably would be better to apply for nie numbers as soon as possible into the moving process to avoid as much stress as possible you need them for mostly everything in Spain even buying large items of household furniture and most definately get a good solicitor they dont have to cost a fortune ours didnt but then I believe we were very lucky to have him on board hope this helps
