Pets in Spain
Posted: Sun Jul 09, 2006 7:54 am
Hi
My dog has currently got his pet passport from the vet so he can now come to Spain with us in September.
I've looked into prices for him to come over on the plane but its so expensive!!
Does anyone know if its ok for him to travel in the car with me instead (as im driving my car to spain)?
Also does anyone know how much pet insurance is in spain - and where do i get it from?
Thanks
Natalie

Just to add (as most people are unaware) you are unable to stay with your car while the ferry is at sea, thus you will have to leave your pet in the vehicle .
So make sure your dog has a little walk and tiolet break before you book into the ferry and also has water in your car for the ferry journey as it can get rather hot down on the car decks especially in Summer.
Also if he is a nervous dog perhaps have a word with your vet to see if you can give him something to settle him down while you leave him in the car.
Another tip; if you're going from Dover time the trip to go on one of the faster ferries, I know the two newest Seafrance ferries (Rodin and I believe the Berlioz) are much quicker to get across the channel than the older fleet.
I'm not sure how quick the P&O fleet are but it's worth calling to ask.

Thanks Zelnek I should have added all that, also like to add if you take the Plymouth to Santander Brittany ferries you have to book well in avance as they only have a limited number of kennels, it's the only one with kennels on board £30 one way for each dog.
The other ferries do allow you to visit your pets during journey, all you do is ask one of the crew and they will escort you down to your car.

As you don't have to leave your car on the euro tunnel and it's a lot quicker and less hassle perhaps this would be the best solution.
No idea about the price differences tho

The Santalucia do all kinds of insurance, inc pets.
www.santalucia.es
I think full cover for a dog is around €60.00 inc vet bills.
