The Good, the bad, and the ugly

Post Posted: Fri Jul 28, 2006 11:59 pm

Greetings to all,

I may be getting a job offer for a position near Schiphol in the coming couple of weeks. My family and I are currently living and working in Munich. My other offers may be in Switzerland.

In order to may an informed decision, I would like to get some people's opinions on what are the best and worst aspects of living in The Netherlands.

Good luck to all.
Joe

Hi,
Since you are already living in Europe, I don't think there will be much difference in living here vs. living in Germany. The only differences would be the cost of goods is a little more expensive than in GErmany. I do know that cars, clothing, etc. is a little less expensive in Germany. And I do know that Switzerland is very very expensive.

As I said, after already living in Europe, I don't think you will have much culture shock moving to the Netherlands. If you have any specific questions, I will be glad to try to help answer them for you. Good luck

Hi,

Who are the good, the bad and the ugly?

I think you will find that things are more informal in The Netherlands. Especially since Schiphol is close to Amsterdam, capital of personal freedom and open-mindedness. People do have a sense of humour. However, some people like this devil-may-care attitude, other don't.

I personally think Amsterdam is getting quite messy, although it has a great service level.

Holland has a serious problem with immigration. Ever since the Muslim decapitation of a famous Dutch filmmaker, race relations are tense. It's also the cause of the political crisis situation today.

But generally administrative rules are just as strictly enforced as in Germany.

Good luck to you too,

Alrik

The best: tolerance
the bad: ignorance
the worst: be prepared to be lonely

good luck
