Might come back to England -have a lot of questions first

Post Posted: Mon Jun 11, 2007 5:47 am

Hi All:

This is my first post,so bear with me.

I've been in Canada many yrs and am thinking of moving back to England.

Now,that makes alive a lot of questions needing answers:

1) Is it possible to pool a UK job over the internet ie: IT?
I have a Network Administration Diploma and A+ and MCP certs and
many yrs computer experience.

I don't know how he does it,but I have a brother-in-law that does it all the time...pools English teaching jobs in foreign countries!)

2) I am UK born, but my wife is Canadian. Can she get UK status, because of marriage?

3) We have a house and investments.

How does one get around the terrible exchange rate : Can$ > Pounds? Leave the money "offshore." Change it into Euros?

4) Healthcare? Does one have to work for a year to qualify,or what?

She needs it more than I do.High blood pressure.

5) Are there IT jobs in Cornwall,Devon,Dorset, etc. That's where I'd like to go this time (even though I was born and even yrs later when I came back in 1978-1981 lived in Kent[and High Wycombe,Bucks)..?

5) What about Agencies, uploading your CV and applying for jobs online?
Do they work?

6)Housing: Where's the cheapest?

7) Any other resources on this website,or elsewhere recommended?

Success to all!

I imagine you will find it very difficult to get housing in the UK. Nowhere is cheap! Check out for an idea on house prices - it covers the whole country and does rents as well. Unfortunately most UK estate agents require you to view the property before you rent so unless you know someone to pretend to be you it will be hard. You also need to pass a credit and employment search to go on their books - (about £75 - £250 depending on area). If you have not had UK employment for 6 months, you will not pass. So you will need a guarantor. There are private landlords who don't ask for all that but most websites are not updated and when you ring, the house has gone months ago.

We are in the same position and finding it virtually impossible to get a house. If there is only you and your wife, maybe a house share would be a better option for 6 months, you can try out an area, look for employment and rent out your house in Canada whilst doing so, so if you don't like it, you can go back.

Health care: you are supposed to be resident in the UK for 6 months before you qualify for NHS treatment. In reality, if you can find a doctor who has not closed their books, you should be OK. Although when I tried to register with a new doctor I was asked for a mortgage deed to prove I lived in the area.

With all the immigration, I think it is getting harder and harder to get back into the system once you have left it. good luck

My wife and i were in the position that we had to return to the UK after being away for nearly four years. We didnt want to sell our properties abroad in order to finance our return to the UK as we expect to return as soon as my wifes health has improved. We found the only way we could get somewhere to live was by going into houseshare, it worked out very well for us.We have now been back for seven months and as i have now been in employment for six months we have just secured a flat through an agency. You may be able to get a flat or house through privately advertised property but there are some horror stories about these landlords.
It is a vicious cirle here job, no place to live, place to live, no job!
Healthcare wasnt a problem as this was our reason for returning as my wife was ill.We just signed on with a doctor upon our return and there were no questions asked.

Good luck.
