My husband and i have been considering a move abroad for some time now but just can't seem to come to any firm decisions, no matter how much research and talking we do.
We are both 33 years old and we have 3 children aged 12,10 and 6. My husband (Glyn) is a Principal Civil Engineer who specialises in highways and transportation. I am in my final year of a 3 year diploma course in nursing.
Over the weekend we attended an Opportunities Abroad expo in Surrey and came away from there feeling quite positive and excited about the thought of a move to another country, and decided that if we did take the plunge then it would possibly be either Canada or Australia, with a tendancy to be keener on Canada. There are so many aspects to consider, with the main focus on jobs. We know for sure that Australia is desperate for Civil Engineers but there doesn't seem to be the same need for Canada. Will it be difficult for Glyn to secure a job before upping sticks to Canada? We are really uncomfortable about rellocating before having already secured a job to go to. As for me, i am likely to be a newly qualified nurse with very little or no experience of working independently as a registered nurse, will i be able to get a job as a qualified nurse, or will i need to do further training to familiarise myself with Canadian nursing practice?
To top our indecision, we are not even sure that we should make a move at all. We currently live in a quaint little village in a very rural part of Hertfordshire where our children attend good schools. Many people have questioned why we would consider such a drastic move. However, if i am completely honest, on a greater scale, we are very disillusioned and fearful of where the UK is heading, coupled with our deep inner desire to see what else is out there while we as a family are young enough to explore.
Is it a case of "better the devil you know"? or "the grass is greener...."? With kids in tow it is a huge decision to make and i would be so grateful for any thoughts and advice that anyone could offer. Also practical advice on jobs, housing, schooling and cost of living. Thanks. xxx

A warm welcome to Expat Focus, and I hope you are able to follow your dream to explore what else is out there successfully...
My advice will follow in 3 parts, but firstly, congrats on attending an Expo and familiarizing yourself with knowledge of opportunities and considerations when looking to relocate abroad.
It will be critical to ensure you are armed with the correct knowledge and experienced support when you decide to relocate to another country.
1. Always. The first part to get out of the way is whether you want to relocate. Once you confirm that, then the next part to get out of the way is whether you can relocate.
Meaning: Are you eligible to pass the immigration requirements of your new host country?
This is consideration #1, because otherwise all other issues and considerations are moot.
(If you can't get there to begin with, then forget the rest of it...is the idea.)
For instance, Canada has a specific 'POINTS' system to regulate who is successful to migrate each year. You must pass the minimum required points to even be considered. I cannot be certain, but I would imagine that Australia will have a similar system as well.
Connecting with a relocation management firm (example in Canada: www.nupad.ca ) for immigration support in the country of your choice will be a critical smart move to start this process free of obligation. I suggest contacting them.
2. Our firm assists many UK clients migrate successfully to Canada each year. We are also the main affiliate for a UK Asset Management firm that assists UK Investors to purchase homes in Canada and to relocate here for retirement etc.
The advice we always give for people with a young family and looking to move here for a career is: Don't move before you secure employment.
Unless you are supported in your host country by family or large settlement funds, we suggest that it is too risky to land here and then expect to be in a job, unsupported in a short time. This represents the highest rate of failure among relocations between any new countries.
Instead, we suggest you connect with a Relocation Management firm (example in Canada: www.nupad.ca ) to first explore eligibility and then to explore employment potential and opportunities. The local insight and support will be critical in achieving your best outcome.
3. Last but certainly not least is...staying in contact. Communicating with other Expats in forums such as Expat Focus will provide you with knowledge and support from professionals and experienced expats alike that will assist in guiding the way.

Obviously you have a computer and know how to use it so...............
Use the Goggle search engine to find........The Ontario College of Nurses web site and read the part about becoming recognised as a Registered nurse in Canada. Each of our 10 Provinces has a Nursing College that is the regulating body in THAT Province. The same thing for Professional Engineers.
Ontario is both the most populated ( 13 million people) and the largest English speaking Province in Canada. Toronto is the capital of Ontario, and the largest city in Canada with 3.5 million people. Toronto has 22 general hospitals and a further 12 specialty hospitals, as well as hundreds of private elderly care facilities. In the 100 mile span around the city of Toronto, there are a further 40 hospitals.
While you are doing web searches, look for Toronto General Hospital, The Hospital For Sick Children, and Credit Valley Hospital in the City of Mississauaga, which is the next city to the west of Toronto. All are large teaching hospitals.
As for your Husband, he should be looking at the three levels of Government, Federal, Provincial, and Municipal. All have employment web sites that allow him to browse the jobs available. The Province of Ontario has THOUSANDS of employees, and it is the largest employer in Ontario with over 100,000 employees, in all kinds of jobs.

I'm currently in the process of getting my visa for Canada. I am a radiographer, with nearly 20 years experience in 3 countries. My best advice to you is to look for recruitment websites who would do a lot of the legwork for you and also know instantly what you would have to do.
The advice from Jim is absolutely right, go to the nursing board sites. They will know how much experience you need to have and what you also have to do to register. I had to have a minimum of 2 years work experience, plus go through a rigorous registration procedure. If you can do that before you go you will know before you go what your chances are. I have also sat a 6 hour exam! All without having to go to Canada, although its very costly, money and time.
I've been preparing for this almost 2 years now, so good luck and don't expect things to happen fast! One website that might be helpful is healthstaff.org they specialise in recruiting health staff from the UK to the North America. There are also useful links to other websites giving information.
