foreigner looking for friends in cairo

Post Posted: Sat Dec 13, 2008 12:37 am

I am a 22 year old South African woman and i have been living in Egypt for 5 months now. I am married to a wonderful egyptian man. We live a modest life here Egypt. I have no children, friends or family here so it tends to get very lonely. I am a down to earth individual who loves reading painting and meeting new people. I am also very shy. I would like to meet foreigners because i feel they can best relate to me. Just for the record we lead a simple lifestyle, we dont have a car, we dont live in a villa and we cant afford much. We are good hard working people and we seek friendship thats it! So if you dont mind my social status please do contact me. Kindest Regards.

Hi Demise where abouts in Cairo do you live?
I'm one of the people living here on 'Egyptian' money not 'expat' money!
What sort of things do you like doing?
We're planning to do an art gallery trip on 20th December (a saturday) and a few other things and we try to keep things cheapish.
I personally am commonly known amongst the people who know me as 'microbus Queen' because that's how I get aboutmost of the time - can't afford taxis as anything other than a VERY special treat or occasional necessity.

Hi Demise,

It's been over 10 years since I lived in Cairo but, at that time, I found the best place to meet foreigners was at events sponsored by the various foreign embassies. You don't have to be a national to attend and, quite often, these events are free. You could also check out events at the English language universities. The other option would be to put up notices in some of the English language schools offering to give English/Arabic conversational exchange to the students. This will expand your circle of Egyptian acquaintances. You might also make contact with some of the teachers. Many of them are only in Egypt on a one-year contract and would welcome meeting someone with local knowledge to help them settle in. Some schools also offer Arabic lessons to visiting foreign students. Both of these groups are living on low incomes and are looking for help integrating themselves. I know I would have welcomed knowing someone like yourself when I was working in Cairo.

Finally, I also lived in Dahab a couple of years ago and was flooded with offers of work from tour, car rental, horse/camel riding companies, etc. who all felt that their customers would be more comfortable dealing with a foreign national. Quite often you don't even need a work permit to work in travel related industries. I was also offered work at some of the English language publications in Cairo. They are always on the lookout for native speakers to write or edit articles.

Perhaps, if your husband is an enlightened Egyptian, he won't object should you find gainful employment this way, expand your circle of friends and raise your standard of living at the same time.
