Calling Pete, SloJan, Ray and the rest - Portugal needs you!

Post Posted: Wed Jan 12, 2005 10:14 pm

Hi All,

I've noticed a growing trend of people arriving in the General Chat/New Member forum wanting or planning to move to Portugal. Thought it would be nice if we all "met up" here in the Portugal forum, so that all the useful info that arrives is in one convenient place.

Some of you have work organised, others are still searching, others may be so fabulously wealthy they don't need to work ( Wink )...whichever of these applies to you, let's pool all our info resources in this forum.

If you need help with any aspect of moving to Portugal, ask for it here and we will do our best for you.

Looking forward to your comments!

Jo

Hi Jo,

I think it's a really good idea to get everyone together.I've got to admit , it was what I was hoping for when I registered on Expat Focus.

My situation has moved forward , but we're not quite there yet! Our UK house is now on the market. I've taken this week off work in order to chase employment. I have sent around 60 emails this week , "cold-calling" freight forwarders from a directory I found online. My understanding is that speculative job applications are the most common way of finding a job (in addition to personal contacts). Apparently they're often successful because it shows the employer that you can show initiative. About 5 emails were unable to be delivered , and I've had two replies already saying that they would keep my CV on file.

Finding property over there is a bit of a headache , but persistance is the key, and we're going over in four weeks time to view any suitable properties that we've been able to find - so fingers crossed!

If any of my fellow 'escapees' want to ask anything , I'm more than happy to share what information I have - and I certainly won't be shy in asking for it either! Very Happy

Anyway , that's it for now , but hopefully we can get things moving forward for everyone.

Best wishes to all!
Pete

Hi Pete,

Well, you certainly seem to have done your homework when it comes to finding work in Portugal. Applying to companies on spec can be demoralising if you don't hear back quickly, but your impressive 60 emails might just do the trick, especially if you've had some replies already! Good luck anyway...

I don't have any employment contacts, unfortunately, but keep checking this forum - perhaps someone who can help is reading this right now Wink

Let us know how things develop, 10/10 for effort so far!

Jo

The email count's up to approx 105 following last week's 1 day annual leave. More emails/phone calls to make tomorrow. I've been in touch with Hays Recruitment , Portugal and they seem quite helpful. They have an office in Lisbon , and last Thursday they opened a new office in Porto, so they've got both parts of the country covered. I emailed the manager of the Porto office, and he explained that once things have settled down , that he'll ring me for a chat. Sounds pretty helpful! His name's Duarte , but I'm at work at the moment , so I don't have his email address to hand. Their web address is www.hays.pt . I'll post Duarte's email address tomorrow.
Hope things are going well for everyone - let us all know how you're getting on! Smile
