.
This is very important for anyone looking at long-term stay in Thailand.

The topic title on this thread is terribly misleading.

To get "permanent residency" here is a lengthy process involving some years of working and paying taxes in Thailand, local citizen referrals as to personal character, and passing knowledge of the Thai language.
Permanent residency is NOT available to retired foreigners.

It looks like the original post is asking about an "extension of visa based on retirement".
To get that retirement extension, certain amounts of money must be show in the bank (in Thailand), or as verified income from abroad.

There is nothing permanent about it -- the extension is valid for one year only, never longer.
Every year one has to go through the application process again, from the beginning, showing money in the bank and/or verification of income.

Rather than trust comments on an Internet forum, a visa lawyer in Thailand is well worth the fee he charges. You will get accurate information, plus quick and proper handling of your application through the immigration bureaucracy. I have used visa lawyers for all my visa extensions here, and all have gone smoothly.

(Sorry, I'm not willing to recommend any lawyers.)
