How to get a Motorcycle Licence?

Post Posted: Wed Jul 13, 2005 10:51 pm

Hi - a client of mine is moving to Amsterdam and has asked how he can get a motorcycle licence. Can someone point me in the right direction? ... and other info about motorcycling clubs would be cool too!
Thnx
Val

Does he already have a licence from another country or is he looking to gain his first licence (i.e. after taking lessons) in Holland?

I've only ridden once in Holland but I know a few people who can probably recommend clubs etc.

Cheers,

Jamie

Hi Rod et al
He has a licence in the US and is an experienced rider.
? Will he need to re-sit a test, or can he swap his US one for a NL one?
He seems to think it's an easy swap .... but as we know som things are not as easy as we expect!

cheers

Val

Yes, you're right to be wary! I know that I was able to "swap" my UK license for a Dutch one at the local office but I don't know if it's possible to do that with a US license (or indeed, if it's necessary to sit a test, although I think that's unlikely). I'll do a bit of digging when I get a chance and see what I can find out.

Cheers,

Jamie

Val,

The following is from the Dutch CBR website (http://rijbewijs.cbr.nl/index.asp?pageid=32):

"If your driving licence was issued in a country other than one of those listed above [i.e. European Union, Liechtenstein, Norway or Iceland], different rules apply. You may continue to use your licence for a maximum of 185 days after making residence in the Netherlands, after which you must pass a CBR driving test."

On the face of it it looks as though a test will be necessary but I think it's worth double-checking. Contact details can be found on rijbewijs.cbr.nl/index...pageid=193

Hope that helps,

Jamie
