No, I did not have to apply for anything to ship things via the post office. There is a form that you get at the post office (get several) that has to be attached to the box you are shipping. YOu fill in the information and also a good tip...ALWAYS say the contents are USED PERSONAL ITEMS..some things I listed as clothes, shoes, etc..but most I just said USED PERSONAL ITEMS. AND ALWAYS VALUE THEM THE CONTENTS OF THE BOX AT LESS THAN $50.00.

If something is not marked as used peronsal and has a high value, then you are taxed before you pick up the box in the Netherlands. I sent at least 10 to 15 boxes and received every one of them with no problems.

I will check with others and see who they used to ship contents in a container. But unless you have A LOT of stuff, you won't need a container. But if you are shipping furniture, just be sure it is worth shipping with the cost that it willbe to ship versus just buying something when you get here.

Hi Martha:
I am going to do some research, but my furniture will probably be too big to even fit through the door of the house I am living in. I heard sometimes they pull things through windows. But you ahve another point if I spend 3,000 t ship the furniture there I could spend that to buy new furniture over in holland. The house is small so I wont have to buy much. I think iam giong to consider selling my things.
So how is life in the Netherlands?

YEs, they do use those lifts to put furniture into the canal houses in Amsterdam because they are usually two or three stories high and the stairs are very narrow.
Life in the Netherlands???There is a lot that can be said about HOlland. I moved here for my dutchie, Jac and have been here for almost 2 years. What brings you to HOlland? Which part of Holland will you be living?
You might be interested in joining a group that I started this year. Its called ExpatWomeninHolland. We now have about 70 members who are all English speaking women who are here for one reason or another. It is sometimes good to have an idea of what to expect when you move to another country and all of these women have experienced that plus its nice to meet other women who have done exactly what you are about to do. If you are interested you can email me at m_andrus @ and we can talk further. And I would be glad to give you any info I can to help with your move. Martha
