I see. Fair comment.

I understand that people may disagree on some advice given on forums, but at the end of the day, I'd rather hear an opinion, even if I choose to disregard it!

I actualy think a great deal of the benefit from forums comes from the range of opinion, as opposed to the unfaltering accuracy of one particular 'oracle'!

Some things are just facts - rules, regs and proccess etc, which someone with long experience of a country like yourself can help with enourmously, but also, you will know as well as anyone how much things change, so the advice of someone who rolled into town 3 or 4 months ago, is just as valid and perhaps more current than the proccess advice we could give.

Other things are just opinion though, Where best to go for XY or Z etc - No right or wrong answer! The more advice on the board, the better.

If you've had a bad forum experience elsewhere, that's their loss. We're glad to have another long standing resident on this board!

oh not bovverred at all, i will tell what i know if it is of help to people then all well and good, but i always say that you should get a second opinion so to speak and find out yourself because things here change daily as you said, and what i think may be right, may have been changed yesterday, although i do have my finger on the button, and know loads of 'useful' things because i am observant and if i see something i will try to find out about it, but in the case about the local housing, i have proved to be right, as they are all being kicked out, but some people still dont learn, they have been kicked out of one particular local housing and then moving on to another one, duh cant help some people!

Hello busybee,

Is hiring a part-time maid illegal in Dubai? Can you expand a little bit about that?

Hi Shireen,

I'm sure someone will be able to expand on exact requirements, but no - it is possible to hire a non live in part time maid through a 3rd party sponsor (agent with authorising visa conditions) or an authorised maid sponsored by a private individual.

It gets tricky though if your maid is not sponsored by you or is not authorised to work outside of her sponsorship which the majority of maids apparantly are not.

Busy bee or anyone else - can you expand?

Thanks Youngandfoolish, it sounds amazingly complex for such a simple thing, but I guess Dubai residents adjust to the rules. We're considering moving to Dubai and/or Canada in about a year and a half. Dubai looks really like a land of opportunity, but some rules just sound weird

Hi Shireen

Authorities are getting very strict on illegal workers is all, so conditions of Visa need to be checked carefully.

Land of opportunity...yes...as long as you are on the right contract!

anybody who is working for you must be sponsored by you, so if you want to hire a part time maid you would need to sponsor her (costs quite a bit) or use an agency (and they do the sponsoring) if you want a part time maid but not live in, and if you sponsor her you would still need to pay for her accommodation (outside of your home etc) but there is a shortage of part time maids, this is because a maid may be sponsored (or has paid somebody for sponsorship) and they have to pay them back, so they work 'as a part timer' as they can usually earn more money, but unless you pay an agency it is illegal, and if caught could be a fine of 50k etc. Have I asnswered your question?
