Taking my cat out of Egypt

Post Posted: Tue Apr 07, 2009 4:03 pm

This is the first time I am traveling with a pet - a cat that we adopted.

The cat has been with us for the last 2 years. Her vaccinations and worm tablets are up-to-date. I have the record of them. She has been microchipped.

I have an international airline approved carrier to take her as hand luggage.

I have heard Egypt Air will allow her with us as hand luggage.

She is a large cat and quite docile unless she gets stressed out or angry.

Now the questions:
1. What is the paperwork/permissions that I require at the Egypt end to take her out of the country in hand luggage? (I have heard some stories about extra charges etc, but nothing confirmed)

2. If she comes as hand luggage, is a soft case better or a hard case?

3. She hates traveling by car and gets stressed, nervous and meows a lot. I cant imagine what the chaos of baggage, check in and flying would do to her. I would rather sedate her for the journey, (in hand luggage, with me at all times) My vet is recommending against this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Any other advice on flying with pets is always welcome.

I think it will depend more on what country you are taking her TO rather than from Egypt as to the paperwork you will need.

You should NOT sedate your cat - she needs to be able to regulate her physiology on the plane in case there is a change in the conditions.

Here are some links about it:

thanks OB,

I'm working on the other end as well. But I've heard there is some paperwork needed at Egypt and a high amount to be paid. Someone I heard of was planning to send his small dog with his brother back to the US as he himself had to break journey a couple of times before returning to the US.

He thought he had all the papers ready (as told to him via phone calls to Egyptair), but was charged a huge sum (3 times that mentioned in the original conversation) in American dollars at the airport, that he just did not have on him and the dog couldn't travel with his brother.

This is a situation I want to avoid at Cairo airport.

What country are you going to Kim? I know someone who takes her cat to and fro Germany so I can ask her if you like what the story is if relevant?
