Can I scrap or sell a UK registered car in Bulgaria?

Post Posted: Thu Dec 31, 2009 5:13 am

Hi

I am planning on driving my old UK registered Corsa to Bulgaria in the summer. The car is on its last legs so I would like to get rid of it in Bulgaria and fly home.

I would be equally happy to scrap it or give it away in Bulgaria but am finding it difficult to find out what paperwork this involves. My car is UK born and bred with tax, mot and insurance all in order.

Any advice would be great?

Thanks
Alan

Hi Alan,
Its a long way to go to scrap a car, but if you do I think that you will need a notirised bill of sale and also fill in the details of sale/scrapage on the UK registation documents then send them all to the dvla.
I am from just up the road from you, Peterhead where in Bulgaria are you ?

I have a similar query but opposite way round. I am currently in France and looking to get a newer car here, but have driven over in Bulgarian registered Jeep Chereokee. I have had the odd offer of a trade in with dealers, but what bit of paperwork would I need to show in Bulgaria I had sold or traded in this car - a notarised bill of sale, same as above?

Thanks for the answers. I am in Aberdeen and planning to drive to St Vlas. The reason for driving rather than flying to to take over an inflatable dinghy and outboard motor.

If I take it to the scrappie in Bulgaria will they give me an official document that I can give to the DVLA?

Hi Guys,

I'm hoping to do a very similar thing this summer, except my final destination was to be Istanbul. However, scrapping a car in Turkey seems to be a nightmare so now looking at driving back into Bulgaria to scrap and fly home.

Would be great to hear from someone who's actually scrapped a UK car in Bulgaria.

Many thanks.

Hi Alan,

there are scrapping companies in Bulgaria. I've heard they do all the work and pay you 150 EUR for the scrap (the car). Will check on Monday and will post you more info.

Hi Alan,
spoke to friends yesterday, they told me you have to sort out all issues at home with the DVLA and ask Inland Revenue is there anything additional you may need (document etc).
It's also important to ask for a document from the scrapping company certifying that the car has gone for scrap, otherwise while leaving Bulgaria without it customs may qualify it as a standard sale of a vehicle and ask for additional formalities.
I think if you employ your Bulgarian lawyer to do the job for you for a small fee it will save you all the hassle there.
