electrician, plumber, builder needed this summer

Post Posted: Fri Mar 12, 2010 4:59 pm

hallo all,

need all the above to rewire house, install bathroom and put in new windows in a house in balatonmariafurdo.
have contacted several folks via internet but apart from one who has bothered to afford me the courtesy of a peremptory reply ( and nothing since), have had no response. i guess tradesmen are about as rubbish in hungary as they are in the uk.

does anyone know of any reliable folks who can behave with plain courtesy - before i am forced to post my requirements on gumtree?

Hello toshka

I’m going through some of the problems people seem to have in Hungary, I can relate to your problem finding a tradesman that can put a fare price and show up,
We built our house using all sorts, had to let two plumbers go as they were doing to many jobs and would turn up at 5pm for two hours work for me.
And if you’re in and out the country this is when they take there leave or bricks.
But there are some very good hard working tradesmen in Hungary. Similar to the UK Windows are cheaper than the UK and well made.
I can forward some numbers if you still need help. Don’t be put off by the few.

hallo DrCMills,

thanks for reply.

i think i got plumber and builder person so bathroom and windows should be OK. He is english person who settled not far from lake balaton so i trust him more than i would a local. but am still desperately in need of an electrician. have 6 names& telnos off the internet but will have to wait until late may/early june when i am in hungary so they can 'come and look'. aha. if you have someone reliable who wont take me to the cleaners i would be greatful.

i have however gathered some experience in the matter since being in bulgaria for 18 months so anyone trying it on will probably end up with a few short, sharp words. after all its not rocket science, if all else fails i shall get a book with pictures and knuckle under...!

so do you live in hungary? how come you know about such things? my parents emigrated in 1956 and we spoke hungarian at home so i am bilingual which helps but not knowing about life in hungary i will have a lot to learn.

thanks again

Hello Toshka.
Firstly electrical work is like rocket science, I had real problems with my guy, had to bring electrician from UK,
I will ask my builder when I return. to see if he has got any new electricians.
I do live in Hungary have two smart children? One in the local school and the little girl has just started kindergarten.
I still do work in the UK,
they do say the brain or the ones with money,,, left Hungary in 1956

i think you need to do your homework, and get used to local way of doing things. There are companies that can help you deal with this kind of problems (e.g. interdean etc) which some of my friends have used and found them typically very useful and totally reliable. Ask your neighbours references, ask people who have just get work done etc. If needed, try to hire a local english teacher or similar to help you.

I am originally scandinavian but even there you need to be careful not to get the electrician from hell Wink

Last 15 or so years i have been living ca 7 to 8 different countries and the experience is always the same, you need to find how things are done locally and if possible try to get someone to help you (or use Interdean or similars) and do your homework. All countries are bit different and it is way to easy to make mistake if assume things are like at home - with my other scandinavian friends we used to always say that "in germany nothing is possible but everything works, in italy nothing works but everything is possible and in UK nothing works and nothing is possible". Last three years or so we have build one house in Spain, one here in Hungary and did major renovation in Slovakia, and we have been very happy with the results everywhere. Of course understanding of time is bit different e.g. in italy compared with sweden...

Hello toshka

Just got back from the UK, we will be having our electrician over this summer,
Our builder is a bit slow to respond to our question if he has more qualified electricians this year,
I’m back in the UK next week only for a few days,
