Cost of living in Qatar

Post Posted: Thu Mar 25, 2010 7:48 pm

I am considering a move to Qatar (have a job offer but am awaiting a visa) I have a wife and 3 kids. We are South Africans living in the UK.
I am trying to find the cost of living in Doha. How much people in my situation (family of around 5) spend on food, utilities, normal sort of entertainment. I need to work out if I can really have a reasonable lifestyle and save money. Responses from people currently living in Qatar would be great.

James.
There is a website (Qatarliving.com) that is recommended on Expatfocus.
The site contains numerous articles regarding the cost of living together with accommodation currently available and with costs (if your company will not provide accommodation).
School fees can be excessive but again the companies generally help out with those costs.
The cost of living will depend very much on your life style.
We raised a family there over a fifteen year stay although the place has changed beyond all recognition from 1982 when it was almost village life.

While the salary looks good, the package is questionable. Good salary sometimes ‘hide’ your real compensation needs, because that’s what a normal working person always think of first , that is “salary” only. As an expat your real needs is different, you need a “compensation” first and then benefits. The employer will always leave out something. Don’t ever think they list down all your needs. They basically use a “generic” expat package for you. Do you think they will offer an “ideal” expat package for you.

Alternatively use the cost of living calculator at costofliving.wix.com/calculator
