Living in St. Martin/ St. Maarten

I'm thinking about relocating (retiring) to St. M (either side). I speak French but not Dutch. Any one have any information about the island? I'm a Brit currently living in the USA (Washington, DC). Have EU passport and an adequate (?) retirement income. Also perhaps interested in any other Dutch or French governed island but not BVI or any former British colonies as they are either too expensive or too conservative for my liking.
