The Portuguese page on the ANPC website gives you more information on the status of fires and links to details which are updated at least hourly:

(I type this with ash landing on my keyboard and smoke in the air)

Update on the fire:
ANPC now says active on 2 fronts (down from 4 all yesterday) and Diário de Notícias has this story:
www.dn.pt/inicio/portu...id=2676808

The fire that started Wednesday in Catraia continues this morning in three active fronts and the flames are moving towards the city of Tavira. Also complicated situation in the municipality of San Algarve Brás where there is a huge ash cloud, with at least one road cut between one county and another. The Mayor of Tavira, Jorge Botelho, since yesterday morning called on the government to decree that the state of emergency in the county.

"I hope that the Government look good for this and decree a public calamity to Tavira. What happened is very serious and dawn when we will see a range of important black county," said the Mayor of Tavira speaking to the Lusa agency with the mobile command post of the National Civil Protection Authority, which is installed on Cachopo, one of the areas most affected by the fire which broke out in Catraia on Wednesday.

Jorge Botelho said he did not understand how the fire spread from the area Cachoupo, having begun in the Catraia until "the entry of Tavira, close to the Via do Infante (A22)." The mayor stressed, Lusa that "Tavira is now a third of the burned area of its territory, with 20 000 hectares lost."

This morning there are three active fronts. "One is dominated and two still evolving," said Commander Paul Silks, attached to the command post location, told Lusa. The official said the same agency that are 650 operational field, supported by 160 vehicles. At TSF radio said that reinforcements are expected in the order of hundreds of firefighters, coming from areas such as Leiria and Porto.

At this time, according to information gathered by the DN, the situation is rather chaotic in the area of the municipality of São Brás, just over 20 km from the city of Tavira. On the ground there is a huge cloud of ash to make the air almost unbreathable, making visibility as if one day they were fog. The flames have reached Bico Alto and Mosquita, very close to the town of Sao Bras de Alportel. The road between the two counties, said the TSF, are cut.

One of the areas where the situation requires vigilance was the Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, midway between St. Brás and Tavira, where the inhabitants are since last night alerted to the possible need to evacuate their homes.
