Iran´s nuclear activity

Post Posted: Wed Feb 15, 2006 7:02 pm

Hi, I´m new here, and I think this site is very useful because we can read several different opinions about one subject.
Me and my family are considering to move to Dubai. I know it is a very safe place, but all these problems over the cartoons and about Iran makes me worry about the future of the region. Could this affect Dubai?Especially this nuclear activity in Iran, should we residents or future residents be worried about?
Thanks for your attention,
Patty

Patty, I think you'll find that the nuclear activity in Iran is as significant as the WMD in Iraq. In other words, in the real world (ie not the US and UK) it is known that Iran is nowhere near developing a nuclear weapon and cannot reasonably be said to be doing so. The greatest threat, as usual, is from the US or Israel launching an attack on Iran, rather than the other way around. That is much more likely in the next 12 months or so.

As far as the cartoons go, there has been almost nothing made of it in Kuwait, other than a boycotting of Danish goods, and I haven't seen anything of trouble in Dubai.

Thanks for the answer.I also think that the greatest danger come from US and Israel. Brazil is so far away from all these problems that we have no idea how thinks like this can affect a neighbor country. As you live in the middle east, can you answer that? Are the other countries near Iran threatened by that?

Before the invasion of Iraq there was no some concern in Kuwait about what the Iraqis would do once the US went in. The feeling was that they would lash out at neighbours ie Kuwait, which they did. However, we weren't worried about Iraq otherwise. The Kuwaitis were pretty glad to be finally rid of Saddam and although it's an unholy mess in Iraq now, at least they aren't even a hypothetical threat to Kuwait.

Iran seems even less of a danger now. If they are attacked they will probably retaliate against Israel rather than the Arab countries. Feelings can change but the situation is calm now and Kuwait is looking forward to life under the new Emir.
