Doctor/PhD - is Norway good option for me?
I am a doctor (hopefully, soon will be a qualified psychiatrist), have a PhD and growing research background in psychiatry. I consider myself a great employee - I'm dedicated, love my job and work hard. I speak basic Swedish. I'm thinking about going to Sweden or Norway next year. I will have an intensive language course provided by the hiring company, so should be able to communicate both with my colleagues and patients, although I believe that a psychiatrist should have much higher level of language competence.
So, the question is - is Norway a good place for me and my family? I'd like to live in the southern Norway, in a city, but not as big as Oslo. Any suggestions?
I know that doctors, esp. psychiatrists, are highly sought in Norway. I wonder if there are opportunities to combine clinical work with research and what are my chances to find a job in a university hospital. If there are any doctors here, how satisfying is to work as a doctor in Norway?
My wife is an IT specialist and also speaks basic Swedish and intermediate English. We have one little boy and since we will have a baby next year, my wife won't be able to start working within a year or so. Therefore, I'd like to know what financial support can we count on? Moreover, what are chances for her to find a job in the future?
Meanwhile, will we be able to live for my salary at a relatively good level? Right now, to secure my family I have to work so much that I rarely have time for anything else, incl. my family and research activity, which both are very important to me. I want to have more time for myself and stop working in five different places.
Thank you for your time and for any help.
