No access to Google

Post Posted: Fri Sep 05, 2014 3:15 pm

Hopefully, one of you techies our there can shed some light on a problem that occurred yesterday when I was unable to connect to any Google website including Gmail.

I have a recently purchased Toshiba Satellite Pro and using a Vodafone 4G wifi connection that according to Speedtest.net was providing a download speed of 28mbps. I was using Firefox and the Google search page appeared, but I noticed this time it said Google Portugal. I went to my Gmail sign in and as soon as I entered my account name and password nothing happened. I then found that I was unable to access anything related to Google or use the Google search engine. I am subscribed to both Malwarebytes and Avast premium services and ran a scan with both that showed nothing. I then removed Firefox and tried IE, again nothing, using IE, I installed Google Chrome which made absolutely no difference. I then went to another computer with Firefox that worked fine until on entering my Gmail account details all Google services were unavailable. Finally, I did the same with a tablet with the same result?

This morning, still using Google Chrome, I am able to access everything except Speedtest.net???

I am very confused and would appreciate an explanation,if there is one.

PS. I spoke too soon !! Although I can now access my Gmail account the Google search engine does not work and the page refuses to change from Portuguese to English when the tab is selected. Could it be something to do with the fact I am now connected to Google Portugal and not Google UK?

I'd check as a start you Vodapone connection, and your laptop settings, you should be able to log in to your Google account to access email from any internet source.

The probable reason is that you are not actually receiving a good Vodafone 4G signal, if not the likely cause is that because dongle/router is set to 4G reception only then if your only getting a 3/3.5G signal reception Google won't connect, the fix is to phone Vodafone and reset dongle/router to 3/3.5G

Course if your paying for 4G and not getting it then that's a separate argument with Vodafone

28mbps download confirms 4g for me. 3g would never reach such speeds.

If the 4g signal fails for even a minute, your sim/dongle will default to 3g or 3.5g for mobile usage (sms & voice). Canoeman could well be correct that the settings on a dongle may need to be adapted to switch to 3g broadband data. On my router it changes automatically as a fail-safe but that could well a feature on routers that is not on dongles.

I use a Toshiba Satellite myself and never had problems using any of the 3 browsers you mentioned at home or in Portugal. I also use Avast (free).

The default to Google Portugal could be because geo/location data is being permitted. Check out some settings in the browser. I'd make Google.co.uk (or .com) my home page and see if that helps.

When I used the Ryanair website in Portugal it always defaulted to Ryanair.pt even if I started with .co.uk.
You are experiencing the same issue. It might be difficult to get around this as the host website (Ryanair or Google) may be using the identity of your ISP (Vodafone PT) to identify your general location, even if you disable any location identifying settings.

Hopefully your broadband issues resolve themselves without any interventions....

Try a vpn set to a uk server & report back.
The free version of securitykiss.com is good

Sorry, did not get back before now to report on the situation, but as Canoeman say's, Vodafone made the necessary change to my router and all is well again. Thank you Munsterman and Hedge for your contribution, I have already thanked Canoeman personally for solving my problem.
