Re: Socrates arrest .... but what now ?

Post Posted: Mon Nov 24, 2014 1:18 am

The algarvedailynews finds it an interesting topic with much ground covered - as someone this well connected has never been troubled before.

But is it really being steered from abroad? With the 'evidence' only being passed to one very busy star judge ? And this judge also busy sorting out the Golden Visa's so no time to chat with ExpatFocus Portugal.

From the TV, already several possible sources of material against the great man. A rogue email or letter. 20 million so far traced. Two banks mentioned ... BES ? Caixa Geral ? Or has someone nobbled his chauffeur ?

It seems that it was a large transfer of money made by his mother from Caixa Geral alerted a member of staff in Caixa who reported it and that triggered the investigation which apparently has been going on for about a year. His (declared) income was not sufficient to pay for the life style he was leading in Paris.

Allegedly he was 'employed' by a company of a friend but he was paying his own salary, the money coming from the 20M offshore account which is in the name of this close friend. The money then was given to the driver to hand over to Socrates in cash.

I am shocked but not surprised, he has been walking on water for some time and getting away with it. I am pleased these people cannot do as they like. Never has a former PM been arrested either because they have been honest, have not been caught or nothing could be proved.

When the Judge ends the interview his findings will go to the Public Prosecutor. In the meantime he is 'inside'.

Thanks Micas. I am hoping that readers of this Forum who speak Portuguese better than I do (and probably watch Portuguese TV) will keep us informed as this is quite a significant story and is of real interest to us all.

It is a big deal that he was arrested; and a very brave move by those that did it.
But it's a long way from there to conviction for big shots in Portugal.
Even middle ranking types seem to be teflon coated here.
So we live in hope...

You will probably have heard that the first stage was concluded yesterday when Socrates was interrogated by a Judge for 3 days and kept in a police cell at night. He is now in 'preventive' prison waiting trial.
He was transferred late last night to a prison in Évora. The 'preventive' can last up to a year although it may take less for him to be tried. Charges are fiscal fraud, money laundering and corruption.
He could have been kept under house arrest awaiting trial but the Judge decided to send him to prison. To be sure, to be sure... The cell must be a bit different from his 3 million euros apartment in the best part of Paris!

I cannot get over the shock and still hope it is not true.

There they are cutting the pensions that are already so low, the salaries, increasing the taxes, asking everyone to 'make sacrifices' to help the country and they are lining their pockets.
