Vehicle insurance online ? & Preglet /MOT

Post Posted: Thu Apr 16, 2015 2:55 pm

Hello

Is it possible to get motor insurance for a Bulgarian registered van online in Bulgaria?
I am in the UK & have the chance to buy a Bg registered van that is also in the UK.
Because I have not bought & registered the van yet I have no paperwork, just the Bulgarian Reg plate number .

Also, the van was registered & had BG MOT (Preglet) in Bulgaria on 26/03/14 (originally UK registered) & the owner says it does not need to be retested for new MOT for 3 years.
I think the owner may be mistaken & it should be re tested every year & they are confusing that only NEW registered vehicles do not have to be tested for 3 years. The van is 15 years old!
I obviously do not want to buy & drive it if the test has expired.
Can you help please?

Many thanks

Kevin

You can contact various insurance agents online and by email and get insurance online. I have renewed my Bulgarian insurance via email when it has come up for renewal and I have been out the country.

BUT you cannot insure it if it is not in your name and to put in your name you need to visit a notary here in Bulgaria with the seller with your Bulgarian ID's.

And you are correct, the buyer is "mistaken" or trying to pull a fast one. You need to get the MOT equivalent every year. He will also need to prove the yearly municipality taxes are all paid and up to date to transfer to you.

Preglet is done when ID card expires as far as my BG speaking buddy says.

The preglet is the equivalent to vehicle reg doc in UK. Every five years coinciding with ID renewal.

The MOT is carried out at a KAT station and is every 12 months.

Our friend is switched on with this as is currently going through the red tape. Look up Linda Shepherd on FB, I am sure she will give accurate and current info.

No the pregled is your MOT equivalent and is done very year.
It is not done at KAT, it is done at an MOT centre equivalent.
The V5 registration document equivalent is the "talon". There are 2 parts to this - the small credit card sized one you should carry around with you and the larger one. The valid to date on these depends on the valid to date on your lichen carte (ID card). That date depends on various things for example how long your passport was valid for when you applied, how long your health cover was for, your rental agreement. It is not always 5 years.

Please make sure you are giving correct information when replying to a post.

Sorry not checked here for a while.

In theory if you are now living permanently in BG you should re-register your vehicle within 3 months (may now be 2???). You might need to change the headlights, but apart from that just need your UK V5 document, your BG residency cards and would take your passports, house deeds and anything else you have as likely to ask for all sorts!!!

You can get it insured on the chassis number either before you start process or go and do after starting paperwork. Will also need to pay import tax/eco tax. Its about 200 levs.
