Just to share my recent experiences.....
I went to the UK for a few days last week. Turned Data Roaming on whilst I was there just in case I received any calls (or needed to make any calls). It is a Portuguese mobile obviously.
I used the phone whilst I was there to access the Internet using free Wi-Fi.
I was surprised to find that I was getting messages stating thta I was being charged for Data Usage. In total €5 over the 6 days.
It appears that YOU MUST turn Data usage off otherwise your phone will keep updating your apps (assuming that you have auto update set which is normal) and if you are not near a Wi-Fi hotspot then it will use the cellular network.
So, turn Data Usage off permanently.
