We have been able to just produce the box and the chemist has sold us the medication. This includes penicillin/antibiotics and pain killers. But would be interested know if you could produce a UK prescription.

The UK script won't be valid legally, but as Bergy says most pharmacies are flexible.

Or they used to be... A new system has just been rolled out, prescriptions are registered on a central database or something. Our doctor was very frustrated as the system was taking forever to do it's thing, taking up a lot of his time.

It also depends on the class of drug, for stronger pain meds there's a far more stringent regime and you need a correctly dated valid prescription and ID.

For the top class stuff like Fentinyl, the script is [was] on security paper from a pad with numbered pages.

not for painkillers just regular medication .gp in uk says they will only write prescription for 3mths worth tabs at a time , so if istay longer than 3 mths and run out have to get someone to get tabs and post out to me , or post me script which would be easier if i can get it dispensed here .

EU to the rescue, suebee (at least for the moment Wink )

europa.eu/youreurope/c...dex_en.htm

And before anybody says "Portugal doesn't obey EU Directives" Rolling Eyes I have checked and this has been transposed into Portuguese national law.

If you want to check whether the medication is available here or what it will cost you, there is a database here www.infarmed.pt/infome...squisa.php

On the matter of cost, I'm guessing here but I think you'll probably have to pay the full price rather than the discounted price a PT resident registered in the Health Service here would pay if the medicine were subsidised.

Not all doctors are using the new system yet Liveaboard. Mine is not and says he will hang on to the old system as long as possible. The new system is electronic and relies on the prescription being sent to a smart phone. For those without a smartphone they have to operate the old system in tandem anyway. One good aspect is that you will no longer have to go to see the doc to get a new script as you should be able to order it online. Again, fine for those that are online.

You are very lucky Bergy. I cannot even get an antibiotic eye ointment here without the necessary paperwork.

Good info from our Colonel.

We are lucky here on the West coast, there are two really good chemists in our area. It is a case of once they know you, so it's worth popping into your local chemist buy a few things and have a chat.
