Best Router for MEO ADSL internet

Post Posted: Fri Dec 02, 2016 6:27 pm

I have telephone line internet service from MEO. We are at the end of a line and so we get 4/5mgs , if lucky, and it is not very stable . I have used an SMC Barricade Router for a number of years but I think that it is now time to replace it.

I wondered if there were any views on the best router for this type of service- it is used for an Ethernet connection for TV and wirelessly for various other devices.
Many thanks.

Which router did MEO give you?
I recently picked up a Technicolor TG784N which is pretty stable and I get an even slower download speed than that.
Previously used a TP Link TD-W8961ND which had to be replaced due to hardware failure, probably caused by repeated power outages. Wasn't as stable as the Technicolor.
Before that I had a D-Link DVA-G3170i/PT provided my MEO. Still have this as a backup router.

Good advice Pete. A DD-WRT router is a good option or one that allows the DNS server settings to be added.

Many thanks for all these helpful replies.

The current weather is possibly not a very fair test but we are having so many breaks in the service that I think that a new router could do no harm and the current one must be 4 or 5 years old.

ADSL is probably not the best arrangement when I know that we are at the end of a telephone wire circuit and MEO like other fixed line operators are not investing in improving fixed line infrastructure.I would transfer to a Vodaphone mobile internet service but I hear that the speed drops of very noticeably as demand rises. I wondered if that was how others found mobile internet services?

my MEO fixed line service is supposedly 24mbs.
I'm getting 2.6mbs; 10% of the advertised speed is pretty poor.

When I complained about the slow speed I gave them this scenario - 'If you go into a bar and ask for a Sagres and pay €1.50 expecting a 33ml but get a mini, are you happy?' No ! well that's how I feel about my internet speed!!!!
