Dual-Citizenship

Post Posted: Mon Oct 16, 2017 12:19 am

Having a hard time finding a resource that lists the steps/documentation needed to obtain dual citizenship. US citizen, living in the US, married to someone who has Belgian citizenship. Where to start with getting the process started? Any help is appreciated!

Hello melje76,

You need to obey the laws of both countries. Some countries don't allow dual citizenship that is why they require the denouncement of the your former citizenship before granting the new one. However, U.S. allows its citizens to hold a second nationality with any nation the individual qualifies to hold one with, whether earned through descent, marriage or residency.

Steps how to File for Dual Citizenship
If you are a citizen of another country applying for U.S. citizenship. First check if your home country permits dual citizenship then, proceed with the application only if it is permitted. Lastly, complete and submit Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

The place to start is at your local commune office. I have dual citizenship - Belgian and British. If you are married to a Belgian it is very straightforward. My understanding is that as a US citizen you may most certainly hold multiple citizenship however you are still liable for tax declaration in the US annually (even though you have no income/holdings there) unless you renounce citizenship, which a number of Americans have done for that reason alone.
