NIE number

Post Posted: Tue Feb 28, 2017 8:18 pm

Can anyone advise re NIE number ,
Firstly I've been told it only lasts for 3 months ??
Can i use a business address instead of home address , im. Based in UK and looking to set up / business in Spain but dont want to rent an apartment until business set up , or do i need both address

Can i use a friends address or will authorities ask for rental agreement or bills or both

I have my appointment next week with local police in Estepona been told i need
Passport plus two copies
Letter from solicitor to say i setting up business
Letter from land lord to say ill be renting unit
Plus the official form and registration fee

Is the above correct ??

Thanks

I applied for my NIE through a firm of solicitors while I was still living in the UK. I now live in Spain and my wife applied for hers when we came here to live.

The NIE number used to last 3 months but it is now issued as as lifetime number.

I used my sisters address and was never asked to prove that I lived there.

I would also take your birth certificate, marriage certificate (if married) plus at least 2 copies of each to your appointment.

Steve

Have you tried a Gestor, they would be similar to a paralegal in the U.K., they go through the paperwork with you and go to the police office with you when you are submitting your forms? I'm in Nerja so can't recommend someone in your area but here for our NIE, we required, passport plus copies, EX15 form completed and payment form from the local bank, I just took copies of everything, yours is a bit more complicated due to your business interests. They were not interested in the slightest in the address I was residing at and are only interested in income when applying for residency. If there is a foreigners department in Estepona they would be able to help you and I'm sure you can manage yourself but if you are only here for a few days a Gestor may be able to prepare it the paperwork before you arrive.

Obtaining an NIE

Obtaining an NIE is a fairly simple process, but can be complicated if you do not understand the paperwork. The simplest way, if using a lawyer to purchase a property, is to instruct the lawyer to obtain this for you. However, it can be obtained by approaching a local police station in your area.

Within your police station there is a Foreigners Department (will be labeled ‘Departmento de Extranjeros’). When you arrive you will be asked to fill out an NIE application form and submit copies of the following paperwork. Be aware, you will require more than one copy at some police stations, so be prepared before you turn up.

Your Passport and a photocopy (the police station will keep the photocopy).
Your full address in Spain (You can use a friend’s address if you have not yet bought a property).
Some police stations may ask for written justification as to why you are applying for your NIE number. A letter from the bank, a lawyer, or even a prospective employer will suffice.

When you have filled in the application form and supplied the relevant paperwork, you will be given a stamped photocopy of the application and given a date as to when to return to pick up your official documents. The general turnaround time can take between one and six weeks depending on the time of year and the number of applicants.

NIE and residency are two different things. I used a hotel address, and they knew it was a hotel address.
