I'm trying to help a couple in the UK who will be moving out here and bringing their car with them. They want to put the car onto PT plates and are asking who could do that for them. Is there any particular person that I need to be looking for? Is this something that driving schools would do; I know that they help with driving licences for instance.

There is no problem in registering a car in Portugal. If you have had the car for 12 months plus then you can register and it's tax free. My best advice would be to go to the Customs the one i went to was in Aveiro and ask them. They are the people who do the registering.

I Registered my car and it only took one day after i went to Aveiro to get the forms from the Customs office. I left home at 7.30am and by 2.14 pm my car was legal in Portugal. No need for a Lawyer and for what reason would anybody usse a lawyer?

Find the link on my Blog to how i did it all in a DAY or send a PM. With all fees it will cost about 500€

Peter

Hi Peterfc, if this is so, do you think that I was done? However, in my case, at least, the procedure was not quite so simple, I had to go to the Technical Inspection office, and then to the Customs office in Aveiro. At the Custom office they went through the documentation in detail, and the lawyer (advocate) had to plead in my favour and answer various questions, all this, of course, in Portuguese. The language barrier was very real, in both cases, although I suspect that the Customs Official did speak English. Perhaps I should have dare it, and go to Aveiro myself, and see what could be done without outside help, as you suggest. Only God knows. Joseph.

Thanks Peter. I was aware that you had done your own and sent you a PM yesterday. The 500€ that you quoted, is that regardless of make, model, year, etc.?

Hi

I went to Aveiro and just asked could someone help me Register my car. Someone then found a lady who spoke good English and explained what i had to do. When i said i would be back the next day she laughed but the next day she say me thinking i had a question. I had the last laugh when i had all my paper work complete and done and at 2.14pm she said you will receive a letter in 7 days with my new number for my car. Done

Go yourself it's nothing to be scared of.

Peter
