Moving to Izmir - best area

Post Posted: Sat Jun 02, 2018 10:19 am

My husband and I currently spend half our time in Kent and half in Istanbul. (He's Turkish, I'm English).

We're thinking of starting a family next year and moving to Izmir - it seems to be a city that has it all! Smile

Does anyone have any recommendations of areas we should look into? I saw a previous thread, but it's from 2013 and I guess the city has changed quite a bit since then.

Ideally we want to be near good transport links, either airport or the new Istanbul road, as we will still need to commute to Istanbul 2 days/week. We're not fussed about being city centre though as being from Kent, my only request about the big move will be a garden / plenty of outdoor space.

Hope someone has some nice ideas of areas to look into. We're planning on doing our first house hunt next weekend...

Hi and welcome! Smile

Izmir is the new Istanbul so probably people will be moving back to Istanbul! Smile

Guess you would be commuting to Istanbul by plane so you would be better off near the airport but it is not such a pleasant place to live and bring up children. The International School is there though. Gaziemir is the name of the nearest neighbourhood to the airport.
There are some houses with gardens around there, near the Optimum shopping centre.

There are not so many areas in the city that have houses with gardens but with a bit of effort one can discover one's dream house....... As your husband is Turkish he will know where to search.

Transport to the airport is good with IZBAN Metro and taxis. Public transport is quite good ( at the moment) all over Izmir, ferries, buses, trams, metro, taxis, shared taxis called dolmus.......

Good luck!
And do come back and tell us how you are getting on!

PS Traffic these days in Izmir leaves much to be desired, it is atrocious! There is never a quiet time, it's always the rush hour all over the city! :0

I would suggest moving closer to the seaside part of the city, areas like Balcova,Goztepe,Narlidere and Guzelbache, and Urla. There is a great variety of beaches to choose from, avoid Cesme if you can,too crowded in summer and really expensive. Property prices are still competitive there (Urla etc) and there are a lot more schools to choose from. Shopping choices are also greater and there are plenty of things to do.
A lot less traffic too, except Sundays!
