Recommendations For a Property Lawyer in Portugal

Post Posted: Wed Jun 27, 2018 6:25 pm

Hi,
Could someone recommend a good lawyer to help with purchasing a house in Portugal. My wife is Brazilian so dealing with the paperwork in Portuguese is not a problem!

We are based in London but moving to Portugal in a few months. I am being quoted just under EUR 3,000 from Portuguese lawyer in London - am I right in thinking this is a bit high?

Thanks very much !

That's ridiculously high.

Lawyer's fees to handle a house purchase should be closer to €500 than €3k.

You really need to find a lawyer in the area you're buying in but make sure you don't use one recommended by the seller or agent

Hi,
Have contacted a few lawyers and am still getting EUR 3k quotes - does anyone know a good lawyer who can do it for less? Thank you

Are you referring to lawyer's fees alone or are you referring to total purchase costs as in tax etc?

If the former then you should be looking at around €500ish and if the latter then it will depend on a number of factors including price of property.

Which area are you looking to buy in?

I am talking to a lawyer right now about buying a property. He is in the middle of Portugal in Tomar and is quoting me € 600 plus VAT at 23% rate, which amounts to the total of € 738. This is just for his fees and not the cost of tax etc. As mentioned above, you need someone local otherwise they will charge for travelling to sign the legal papers etc. We initially were introduced to someone in Faro who quoted £3k for exactly the same work. Our chap comes highly recommended and we found him via an expat forum and then separately our estate agent recommended him.

Hope this helps.
Nic.
