Land Registration/Ownership

Looking for information regarding land registration and ownership.

My mother was from Portugal and she passed away a few years ago. She had bought and inherited land in Portugal. I do not have any documents/deeds of these lands. Where/Who would I need to contact in Portugal to get a list of the lands that she owns?

Your help is appreciated,

Hi Hob

I recently needed to trace the owner of a property in my village. The Camara where of no help. I went to the Finacas who when asked printed of a copy of every property owner in my village. I could identify the property i needed to know about because the person was English and had an English name. The help i received may be because i know the person in the Finacas office.

So long as you know names you should get some help.

Good luck

Finanças would certainly be a good starting point to make enquiries.

Land / property acquisitions should be officially registered whereupon they are associated to the owner via fiscal number, so if you have a record of your late mother's identifier (NIF) that would probably help, although I don't know whether Finanças are legally empowered to hand out such information willy-nilly on request.

Another alternative might be to try to track down any Portuguese will through the Central Registry Office.

Are you coming to Portugal or hoping to be able to chase it up from abroad?

Thank you both for your reply.

I was told to contact a Notary office so I sent emails to 3 in Viseu but haven't heard back and it's been 3 weeks now. I have also contacted www.predialonline.pt but also got no response.

I don't have a NIF or any documentation that these lands exist under her name. I know the area where these properties exist but not their locations. I was hoping that if I provided proof of her death and proof that my sister and myself are her children, then they would be able to look up the lands registered to her name and transfer them to our names as heirs.

I'm currently not in Portugal but my sister and I will be visiting next month for 3 weeks to finalize this. I just wanted a place in Portugal to contact to make sure we're bringing all the documentation necessary to process this and if we need to do anything beforehand. I have been unsuccessful thus far. We don't know of any existing family members in Portugal that we can contact to assist so I've been searching on the internet.

I will see if I can find a finance office to contact.

Thanks again,
