looking for housing in San Jose area, August 2006

Post Posted: Wed Apr 26, 2006 2:53 am

1) We are relocating to Costa Rica in August to take up a school-year teaching position in Santa Ana. Neither of us have been to CR, and we're looking for a place to live in the San Jose area. We have no particular desire to be in an expat community, and are happy with just the basic amenities (nothing fancy necessary), however we would prefer to be in a less-congested area with easy access to green space and walking. Would anyone have advice on neighborhoods that might at once suit our 'nature-loving' temperaments and be within striking distance of Santa Ana (bus route, or cycle-able, we won't likely have a car).

2) On a further note, does anyone have advice on the feasibility of keeping two places (one for K in the city, near the school, and one for M on the coast, for retreat and writing...). We don't know enough about the road/public transport situation to determine whether this is a possibility. Thoughts? Thanks, K and M

You should look around Ciudad Colon, maybe Puriscal. This is west of Santa Ana on the highway and is more rural. You will have an easier time finding local flavor there.

You might not rule out Santa Ana itself, you would want to look for something in the center since most of the communities surrounding Santa Ana itself seem to be dominated by expats.

I wouldn't jump into getting two places, especially if you are talking about not having a car. You should be able to find one place that is quiet enough with good transportation for commuting.

Public Transportation is plentiful and cheap. Especially along any axis going towards San Jose. In this case you will have an easy time getting to and from any place along the highway that runs Santa Ana - San José. This is because buses from Puriscal, Brasil de Mora, Ciudad Colon Where people sometimes run into trouble is getting between outlying areas, you end up needing to transfer 2 or 3 times.
