I understnd there are companies that buy Uk reg cars in Spain. I am sure you do not get the actual value. But I also undertand that a good used car in Spain is a lot cheaper than buying one in the UK. Is that true? What is the best way to buy a used vehicle in Spain?

It's the opposite - used cars in Spain tend to be pricey compared with UK but then to import a car costs approx. 1000 euros + hassle so you have to take that into account to.

In general across western europe the LHD markets hold their value better than the UK and unfortunately Spain and Portugal are two of the most expensive places to buy new and used vehicles.

The days of the UK being a rip off for new and used cars are well and truely over and as for a number of years the interest rates have been low has hit the UK pre-owned market even more as people will tend to go with something new or near new rather than pre-owned as the 0% offers and low loan rates draw them in.

To purchase in Spain is quite straight forward you will need your NIE number and you also have a pay a charge for new ownership.

However if you wanted to import a LHD (or RHD for that matter) vehicle into Spain yourself then you can do it import duty free if you have owned it for six months or more and thus just have to pay for registration which I've seen people being quoted from 700-1000 euros which is staggering amount of money as compared to my cousin who has just done his car himself it only cost him circa €400.

RHD will have to be converted for us in a LHD country first which is an additional cost.

What kind of conversion do they have to have? We are planning to bring our UK car to Spain at least for the first 6 months. But if like you say it is reasonable to keep it there then we will do that. We have had over two years, it is an older car but realiable. We will drive it for the first 6 months and then decide what to do. What is your take on that?

The only mods you should need is LHD headlights and the rear foglight needs to be on the other side.

The foglight is the only semi complex thing as worse case scenario you would have to my a new rear cluster and tap into the wiring loom for the foglight on the other side and run it to the opposite side.

You may be extremely lucky and have a car that already has a cluster and wiring loom for the foglight on the other side and the only thing you would need to do is swap the bulb over to the other side.

Hope this has helped.

Dumb question. LOL What is the difference in RHD headlights and LHD headlights? I thought headlights just pointed straight ahead of your car.

Also what is a fog light on the rear of the vehicle? Never heard of it. Did not know I had one. LOL
