Thinking of Relocating

Post Posted: Fri Sep 22, 2006 4:46 am

Hi folks. I'm new to this site. I'm thinking of relocating to Pattaya and have a few questions.

I'm currently a Computer Technology Instructor at a Nevada Community College. I teach computer programming and information technology.

If I move to Pattaya, would there be opportunities for me to teach in Thailand?

I'm not ready for full retirement (48 yrs old now but will be about 50 when I finally make the move) but want a better standard of living. Housing, food, transportation, etc are expensive here. By the time I move, I'll have about $60,000 in retirement saved up (started late). I would need to work but could use small amounts of retirement (interest) to supplement when needed.

My Social Security account would provide me with about $1200 per month if I were able to get it right now. I'm guessing that when I finally do get it, it will be around $1500 per month (14 years from now)

Is the education system there about the same as here, where an instructor teaches 5 three credit classes per week?

I'm open to teaching English as well. I have a BS in Computer Information Systems and by the time I do finally move, I'll have a Masters in Computer Science.

Since I'm VERY computer literate, I would also want to work on my own computer programs, possibly for sale via the internet (shareware, etc). Would this be considered "work" by Thai law? If so, are there any major hurdles that anyone knows of? If I used PayPal and had the proceeds sent to my U.S. account, woud that make a difference?

I love this site. Thanks!
