Car Thieves active in Nerja

Post Posted: Mon Feb 05, 2007 10:33 pm

A word of warning.

We have just returned from Nerja.

On returning to the car a couple of hours later we found it had been broken in to.

Drivers door lock completely ruined.

Nothing taken from inside of car but an old VCR player waiting to be dropped off at the basura taken from the boot.

This was Hubbys first trip out in months - has a recently diagnosed severe Heart condition - and has completely ruined what should have been a treat for us.

Just wanted to warn everyone to be wary - residents as well as visitors - this was not a hire car that are generally more at risk.

Really sorry to hear your news Sad

Thieves will always break into a car in the hope of finding something valuable.

Everyone should park their cars with the glove box open and empty, all ashtrays open (to show there is no money left) this tells the thieves there is nothing of interest to them in the car and you know their 'game' so there will be nothing in the boot either.

It really works, my car was broken into 5 times in under a year until I started to do this and now nothing *touch wood*

Is crime that bad out there?

Generally we have no fear of crime - often leave our front door wide open which we would never have done in the UK.

But, obviously, you have to be sensible.

The spate of car thefts in Nerja has been attributed to a gang from Eastern Europe who are supposed to have now been apprehended. Similar gangs were supposed to be operating in the Marbella area.

Hi andy,
Crime is crime, its all over the world, even in the UK, so Spain is not worse that any other part of the UK. Its normaly tourests that get hit, or UK reg cars, as these are seen as easy targets, thats why we expats hear more about it.

But if you take the proper precautions (like in the UK) then you have nothing to worry about.
