Adelaide - Healthcare and Medical Treatment

Healthcare and medical treatment is easily available, and of excellent standard throughout Australia. The same can be expected of healthcare services in Adelaide.

Australia has health care agreements with United Kingdom, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy, Finland, New Zealand, Malta and Ireland, but these agreements generally cover the cost of treatments that are medically necessary, and do not cover entire health services, and are dependent on your residency status in Australia. Check with Medicare Australia here. The Medicare Office in Adelaide is located at 30 Currie Street, Adelaide SA 5000.

For expatriates from other countries, check about the extent of coverage from your insurance before leaving for Adelaide. Medical cover requirements can vary, depending on your visa. As of September 2009, if you are on a Temporary 457 Visa, you are responsible for your own health costs. Hence, you required to show evidence that you have made adequate arrangements for private medical insurance when applying for a visa. More information is available at is a website maintained by the Australian government that lists all the types of private health insurance available. This is the best place to start, when trying to find out more information about private health insurance in Australia.

For emergency medical treatment, go directly to any one of the public hospitals. If you need assistance getting to a hospital, the SA Ambulance Service Telephone number is 1300 13 6272. The major hospitals in Adelaide are :

The clinic is located in AMA House, first Floor, Ward Street, in North Adelaide. (Tel: 8267 3544; after office hours mobile : 0412 829 904). You need a referral if you wish to see a specialist. There are pharmacies that open daily, and/or operate 24 hours, but they are rarer than in Sydney or Melbourne. That being said, they do exist.
