Adelaide - Healthcare and Medical Treatment

Healthcare and medical treatment is easily available, and of excellent standard throughout Australia. The same can be expected of healthcare services in Adelaide.

Australia has health care agreements with United Kingdom, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy, Finland, New Zealand, Malta and Ireland, but these agreements generally cover the cost of treatments that are medically necessary, and do not cover entire health services, and are dependent on your residency status in Australia. Check with Medicare Australia here. The Medicare Office in Adelaide is located at 30 Currie Street, Adelaide SA 5000.

For expatriates from other countries, check about the extent of coverage from your insurance before leaving for Adelaide. Medical cover requirements can vary, depending on your visa. As of September 2009, if you are on a Temporary 457 Visa, you are responsible for your own health costs. Hence, you required to show evidence that you have made adequate arrangements for private medical insurance when applying for a visa. More information is available at www.immi.gov.au. www.privateheath.gov.au is a website maintained by the Australian government that lists all the types of private health insurance available. This is the best place to start, when trying to find out more information about private health insurance in Australia.

For emergency medical treatment, go directly to any one of the public hospitals. If you need assistance getting to a hospital, the SA Ambulance Service Telephone number is 1300 13 6272. The major hospitals in Adelaide are :

The Royal Adelaide Hospital. Largest hospital in Adelaide. Located in Adelaide CBD, at North Terrace, near the Universities of Adelaide and South Australia (Tel : 8222 4000).

The Flinders Medical Centre. (Public Hospital). Located in Bedford Park, at Flinders Drive (Tel : 8204 5511).

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Located in Woodville, at Woodville Road (Tel : 8222 6000).

The Modbury Public Hospital . Located in Modbury, at Smart Road (Tel : 8161 2000).

The Women's and Children Hospital. Located in North Adelaide, at King William Road (Tel : 8161 7000).

The Lyell McEwin Hospital. Located in Elizabeth Vale, at Haydown Road (Tel : 8182 9000).

For non-emergencies, you can visit a doctor (also known in Australia as a General Practitioner or GP). You can refer to the White Pages for a list of GPs. Try the term, "Medical Practitioners". Alternatively, you can try visiting medical centres, such as Globe Medical (Address : 21 Hindmarsh Square, Tel: 8232 7372; Mondays-Wednesdays, and Fridays : 9am to 530pm; Thursdays : 9am to 830pm. Operating hours on Saturdays by appointment only) or City Centre Medical (22-29 Gilbert Place. Operating Hours : Mon, Wed :9am-7pm; Tues, Fri : 9am-5pm; Thurs, Sat : 9am-1pm). Some clinics may operate daily, but only a few offer 24-hour services. The Adelaide Medical Clinic offers 24-hour home visits for medical services. The clinic is located in AMA House, first Floor, Ward Street, in North Adelaide. (Tel: 8267 3544; after office hours mobile : 0412 829 904). You need a referral if you wish to see a specialist. Some hospitals are also referral hospitals. For other medical services, such as dentistry, refer to the Australian White Pages (under Health).

There are pharmacies that open daily, and/or operate 24 hours, but they are rarer than in Sydney or Melbourne. That being said, they do exist. Within the city, there is a National Pharmacy outlet in North Adelaide that operates daily (9am to 9pm; 56 O'Connell Street; Tel : 8239 0322). The National Pharmacy branch at Mile End (199 Henley Beach Road) operates daily (830am to 830pm; Tel : 8443 5466). The Chemplus store in City East (192 Hutt Street) operates 24 hours daily (Tel : 8223 3259).
