Australia - Hospitals

It is generally considered that the hospitals in Australia are among the best in the world with the most up to date technologies and innovations. Across the country there can be found more than 750 public hospitals which total more than 50,000 beds. This has been the case for more than a decade and these work alongside approximately 500 private hospitals.

Patients that opt for private medical care will receive a better level of service than those in a public hospital. Most private hospitals offer private rooms and a variety of extras in the way of facilities. However, it is public hospitals that are busier and the city hospitals naturally see more admissions than those in other parts of the country. One of the busiest is the Royal Melbourne, which averages more than 85,000 admissions each year. This is followed by the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital which has around 75,000 admissions each year. The Westmead Hospital in Sydney sees nearly 70,000 patients each year and the Royal Adelaide Hospital is not far behind with almost 68,000 admissions. In Perth the busiest hospital is the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital with nearly 65,000 admissions.

There are a number of private hospitals that have an excellent reputation. The Royal Darwin Hospital in the Northern territory is a relatively small hospital with just 300 beds with a number of specialist departments such as intensive care, an emergency department and a paediatrics department. It is a teaching hospital which is connected with the Flinders University in Adelaide. St Helens Private Hospital is located in Hobart, Tasmania. This is a fairly small hospital with just 37 beds and there is a number of speciality departments located there. These include psychological medicine, maternity care and fertility treatments. In Deakin West in the Capital Territory the John James Memorial Hospital has a good reputation with a wide range of facilities. Greenslopes Private Hospital is located in Greenslopes, Queensland. The hospital has 550 beds, a 24 hour emergency department and a specialist cardiac department. This hospital was once voted the best private hospital in the country and its history dates back to the Second World War.
