Jessica Knopp
Belgium

Who are you?

My name is Jessica and I am a twenty six year old freelance writer and photographer living in Antwerp. I am originally from the South Island of New Zealand, which is quite literally the located further than any other country from Belgium. In New Zealand I lived next to the Fiordland National Park, location of many of the Lord of the Rings sets, and enjoyed being so close to such an extraordinary landscape. I moved here with my daughter when she was two years old, and despite a short period spent in Germany, have been calling Antwerp home ever since.

Where, when and why did you move abroad?

I moved to Antwerp in the summer of 2006, and it's sometimes hard to believe I've now been here for seven years.    more ...

Mel
Belgium

My name is Mel and I am an American woman, married to a Dutch man. I'm a geek, reader, blogger and photographer. You know. Just a girl.

I moved from the US to Antwerp, Belgium, in 2009. We came because my husband was (and still is) in university over here and we did not want to continue our relationship across an ocean. Besides which, I love it in Europe and was thrilled to have a good reason to come over!

What challenges did you face during the move?

Not very many. It isn't very difficult for an American to come over here, especially since we got married at the same time.    more ...

Alison Cornford-Matheson
Belgium

I’m a Canadian expat living in the centre of Brussels, Belgium. I’m a photographer, artist and writer and I run a blog for expats in Belgium and abroad called CheeseWeb.eu

My very first ‘expat’ experience was back in 2004. My husband was transferred to the Netherlands for 3 months to help start up an office there. We lived in Amsterdam and I fell in love with the city and knew I wanted to move back.

The following year Andrew’s company was acquired by an American firm. They offered to let us move to Europe more permanently, with one catch – We had to move to Belgium rather than the Netherlands.    more ...
