Interview With Derek Knight, Expat Author

Tuesday February 02, 2016 (14:49:00)
Derek Knight
Derek, you're an author, blogger and columnist for ExpatFocus. Tell us a bit about yourself: What was it that first prompted you to start writing?

Well, I always wanted to write, which probably came from being an avid reader when I was young. I loved the way a story could carry me away from where I was to somewhere entirely different, and I wanted to be able to do that too.   more ...

Interview With Sarah-Jane Butler, Founder, Parental Choice

Friday January 22, 2016 (15:29:02)
Sarah-Jane Butler
Sarah-Jane, you're the Founder of Parental Choice, which provides specialist childcare services. Tell us a bit about the company, and what drove you to start it.

Parental Choice provides all-encompassing childcare and admin services for parents who wish to spend the little time they have with their children rather than sorting out their childcare. We offer childcare search services finding schools, child-minders, nannies, au-pairs, nurseries, maternity nurses and tutors for parents. This is supported by payroll and employment legal services.   more ...

London is a lively, dynamic city home to booming business and the cutting edge of creativity. Bright young things are moving into every industry, shaking things up with new ideas and founding their own companies.

Brits are particularly keen to shake off the 9 to 5 straitjacket and work to their own rules. Freelancing is now at an all-time high and could soon overtake the number of people employed in the public sector.   more ...

Ten UK Cities To Move To That Aren't London

Monday December 21, 2015 (16:40:36)

London is the centre of the universe. At least that’s the impression you could get from watching British TV shows, movies or news programs. Rather than being the capital of a diverse and vibrant country, London sometimes seems to be shown as the last surviving city after the rest of the UK got sucked into a black hole.

Indeed, for many Londoners the M25 marks the boundary between the safety of the Big Smoke and the wild, uncivilised countryside.   more ...

Living In London This Christmas? Here Are Ten Things You Should Do

Saturday December 19, 2015 (17:52:59)
© Garry Knight
Being away from family can be very difficult for expats at Christmas. More than most other celebrations, Christmas, for most people who celebrate it, is all about sharing with extended family and close friends. Spending Christmas away from all of them can make you pretty miserable if you let it. Nonetheless, if you enjoy Christmas and the Christmas season, London is among the best places in the world to be in at this time of the year.   more ...

A Guide To The People You'll Find Riding The Tube Lines Of London

Saturday December 12, 2015 (10:36:15)

Samuel Johnson may have said, “when you’re tired of London, you’re tired of life”, but the man neglected to mention that it is the city’s people that keep it an ever-changing medley of cultures, faiths, nationalities, music, art, fashion, languages and attitudes.

There are over 300 languages spoken in the capital and 36% of the population was born outside the UK. There are more than 50 recognisable non-indigenous communities. London also boasts 72 billionaires residing in the city: more than anywhere else in the world.   more ...

A Guide To The Islands Of The UK

Wednesday December 02, 2015 (13:53:39)

The United Kingdom is complicated beast, a dysfunctional family of nations muddling through their differences and staying together through thick and thin.

This land of hope and glory is not just a hodge-podge of political and historical alliances seemingly created just to confuse tourists, but a glorious landscape of green and pleasant vistas. Floating proudly and defiantly off the coast of Europe, the UK bobs in the waters of the North Atlantic, separate from the continental mass.   more ...

Moving abroad is a brilliant way to immerse yourself in a new culture and give your life a makeover. Many expats decide to make the move for reasons related to their careers, perhaps being relocated by their companies, or to set up their own business in a place where the overheads are lower than they would have been at home. Others move to retire, to provide a higher standard of education for their children, or simply for a change of scenery.   more ...

Interview With Kerry Chislett, Senior Business Development Manager, Pickfords

Thursday November 12, 2015 (17:14:47)
Kerry Chislett
Kerry, tell us a bit about yourself. What's your background, and how did you come to work at Pickfords?

I’m an expat myself; I followed my heart to come to the UK from New Zealand, to join my wife and childhood sweetheart, so one could call me a ‘stealth expat’! Prior to that I lived and worked in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and America.   more ...
