Canada - Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador consists of two areas of those names, although residents still refer to the two parts of the province separately. The province is located on the eastern coast of Canada. The province is a former colony of the UK and only joined Canada in 1949. It has an estimated population of just over half a million people and most of these live on the island of Newfoundland. The population has declined a little in recent years as people have moved to larger cities for work. There is a growing expat population, with migrants from Russia, Germany, the UK and other parts of Europe having already settled in the region.

The area has several different types of climate but is mainly a continental climate, which is heavily influenced by the proximity of the sea. The area has mild summers and colder winters. There can be quite heavy rainfall throughout the year and the area is prone to storms during the winter months.

Newfoundland and Labrador – Employment

As with all Canadian provinces, migrants can apply for work permits and visas on the basis of their skills. There are some professions where skilled staff are in short supply including teaching, medicine and construction. The website of the Newfoundland province government has information on the skilled worker programme and will also offer advice on the procedures that should be followed in order to gain clearance to work in the country.

Most people are employed in the health care, financial and mining sectors. Those who are qualified and experienced in these areas will find it relatively easy to find work and there are opportunities at all levels. The oil industry also employs a large number of workers. As the province consists of two islands, there is also an active fishing industry, although this is much harder for a migrant worker to get into. The tourism industry also offers a number of opportunities, although these may be seasonal and there is a lot of competition for vacancies.

Newfoundland and Labrador – Property

The main city of the province is St John’s. There are several areas which are ideal for those moving to the region, particularly as most jobs will be located in this area. The southern part of the city consists of the neighbourhoods of Mount Cashel, Virginia Lake and Pentanguishene. The houses in the Virginia Lake area tend to be large detached homes on large parcels of land, although there are a few apartment buildings. Homes in this area are much sought after which has helped to keep prices higher than in other areas. There are just two primary schools in this part of the city and high school students need to travel a short distance.

The district of Conception Bay in St John’s has several neighbourhoods to choose from, which range from fairly quiet inexpensive areas to more exclusive developments which are more expensive and offer much larger homes. Most homes are detached family homes, although there are some apartments available as well as townhouses. There are several schools in Conception Bay for all ages and the area has good shopping facilities. Leisure facilities include sports facilities and cinemas.

The central part of St John’s is home to the more historic parts of the town, including the downtown area, which has brightly coloured houses and Churchill Square which has many properties rented and owned by those who are working and studying at the university. Property prices depend upon the neighbourhood, but there are areas which are suitable for all budgets. There are several good schools in the area and residents have access to a wide range of leisure and shopping facilities.

Another city located close to St John’s is Mount Pearl. There is a growing commercial and industrial sector in the town which is attracting workers all the time. Many workers who have jobs in St John’s have chosen to live in Mount Pearl as travelling to the city is quite easy. There is a good selection of schools for those who have children and the selection of homes in the city ranges from apartments to large detached homes. Prices are lower than in St John’s, which also attracts newcomers to the town.
