Communications (Telephone, Post, Internet, TV, Radio)

Austria - Communications (Telephone, Post, Internet, TV, Radio)

Austria's telecommunications services have been liberalised and there are choice of providers of fixed telephone and internet services using analogue or ISDN. High-speed DSL internet services are also available. The two most popular providers are Telekom Austria and Priority Teleko. You can apply online for a fixed phone line, or to take over an existing connection. It is often cheapest to make international calls from Austria using prepaid IDD cards or international call centres.

Austria's mobile phone networks use the GSM standard, and mobile phones operate on 900Mhz or 1800Mhz. Austria has almost full mobile phone network coverage, except for a few remote areas. There is a large number of network providers in Austria including A1, T-Mobile, One and Yesss. 3G services are now available in Austria. In Austria, mobile phones are generally known as Handys.

Normal post office opening hours are Mondays to Fridays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the cities and main towns, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 5 p.m. in rural areas. The main post offices in many cities stay open until midnight.

Television and radio services are dominated by Oesterreichischer Rundfunk (ORF), the national broadcaster, which operates two TV channels and 4 radio stations. Following recent liberalization of the broadcasting market, there are now a growing number of private commercial broadcasters including local radio and TV stations. Cable and satellite TV are also popular in Austria, and many cable and satellite channels are transmitted here from Germany.
