Social Security and Welfare

Gibraltar - Social Security and Welfare


It is compulsory in Gibraltar for employees to make contributions to the Social Security system, but for those who are self-employed contributions are voluntary. Gibraltar has a range of benefits which is comparable to those in most other European countries, but only those with a record of contributions are eligible to claim. Contributions are calculated on a percentage of earnings, so those who are on lower wages make lower contributions. Part-time workers are now able to accrue contributions towards a pension for their retirement.

Those who have been forced to stop work due to injury or disablement can claim a weekly benefit. If disablement will prevent you from working for any length of time you have the option of receiving a lump sum instead. If a worker should die in the course of their job, their spouse or dependent children may be eligible to claim death benefit.

Workers who have made contributions to the Social Insurance Fund will be eligible to claim unemployment benefit in the event of losing their jobs. This is paid weekly and only to those who are capable of working and are available to work. A minimum number of contributions is required and the amount paid will vary according to the personal family situation of the recipient.

Other benefits which may be payable include Widow's Allowance, Guardian's Allowance, Maternity benefits and a Maternity grant, among others. Information on all available benefits is available from the Gibraltar Social Security office.

Benefits should be payable to all expats who are making contributions to the Social Security system, although it is a good idea to check with the Social Security department in Gibraltar to find out what contributions you would be expected to make and which benefits you could claim if you were to need financial help.

UK expats who are already claiming certain benefits in the UK may find that these can also be paid to them while they are in Gibraltar. Anyone in receipt of a UK benefit should check with their local social security office to establish if they may be eligible for this. Expats from other countries should also check with their local social security offices to see if monies can be transferred to them while they are in another country.

Those who find they are not eligible to receive social security benefits should make private insurance arrangements to cover themselves if they should find themselves ill or out of work.
